If you want a great hiking experience, a less crowded trail, and amazing views, Sanitas is the place to hike. Unlike the many trails at Chatauqua Park, the Mount Sanitas trail is not overrun by tourists hiking up to the Flatirons. However, the views of Boulder from the top are still just as breathtaking.
The trail head is located on the north side of Mapleton Road, 0.5 miles west of 4th Street. Once you get to the trail head you have the choice to hike the Sanitas Valley trail or the Mount Sanitas trail. Both of the trails lead to the same summit, so you can take one of them up and the other one down if you choose. I prefer the Mount Sanitas trail because it’s easier to follow and has more of a gradual incline where Sanitas valley is flat for a ways and then gets steep pretty quickly.
Along the Mount Sanitas trail you will find several sports to climb up some rocks to get some great views, or just take a break. The trail is moderate to difficult, so beginners will be fine, but may need some breaks along the way. I definitely recommend bringing lots of water and a snack to eat once you get to the top. The total hike takes about two hours, and is worth every minute!
